What to specify when booking 3D Laser Scanning Services
What to ask for when contracting a 3D Laser Scanning Services:
- Do I ask for this, or do I ask for that?
- Focus on Results, not method – talking about your needs and pain will result in the best solution being offered to you.
- Lean on the expertise of the 3D LiDAR and laser scanning service provider to offer the best solution.
It is not uncommon for architects, engineers, contractors, and owners (AECO’s) not to know what to ask for, or what to expect, since they have not been trained in the process of LiDAR or laser service provider and their architectural survey tools. Typically, AECO’s have relied on the land surveyor or measure service company with limited tools to provide that knowledge. It is the responsibility of the 3D LiDAR/2D Laser scan service provider to share their expertise and offer the capability of scan options to offer the best solution so that the AECO will be able to get exactly what they want.
Outside of basic dimensions, 3D LiDAR scanning services offer visual data via point cloud data that can be managed from your hand-held device. The ability to access data on the fly has transformed the typical AEC day-to-day discussions around planning and budgeting. Making informed decisions has never been easier with access to highly accurate 3D data that’s accessible to everyone involved with a building project. A basic camera and tape measure will always have their place, but with so many more options available, accuracy and reduction of errors and omissions have taken the lead.
LiDAR captured data allows for in-house, on-the-fly discussion, about where and what cross-sections, elevations, or other details such as HVAC systems and other services are required for the design and proposal of the building.
The data capture file sizes range from 50G/100G/200G depending on the scope and size of the project. Unless you are a technical agency that has the in-house expertise to prescribe the hardware/software, process data and method in detail, and specifying the required overall performance and deliverables, relying on the LSSP to handle this technology is the best approach.
